Barnes & Noble Harbor East Opens This Fall: What Baltimore Job Seekers Should Know

BALTIMORE, MD — Barnes & Noble is coming back to the city this fall with a new Harbor East store at 801 Aliceanna Street, the company's first Baltimore location since the Power Plant store on the Inner Harbor closed in August 2020. A new store needs a full crew of booksellers, and a second Baltimore-area location is already lined up for Lutherville, so retail job seekers on both sides of the city line have reason to pay attention.

Barnes & Noble's Return to the Waterfront

The store takes over the former Oceanaire Seafood Room space near John Paterakis Circle, in the middle of the Harbor East blocks that already draw office workers, hotel guests and weekend crowds walking over from Fells Point. Harbor East management announced the lease in June, and the neighborhood's own Barnes & Noble listing still reads "Opening Fall 2026." The company's official store page is live with the Suite 105 address.

For downtown, the return closes a six-year gap. The Power Plant store on Pratt Street ran from 1998 until 2020, and Baltimore City has gone without a standalone Barnes & Noble ever since. Harbor East president Tim O'Donald called landing a bookstore "a thoughtfully planned, long-term goal" for the neighborhood.

Barnes & Noble has not said how many people the Harbor East store will employ, and it has not announced a hiring event. That's worth knowing before anyone drives down Aliceanna Street with a stack of resumes. What we do know is how a store of this kind is typically staffed: booksellers who work the floor, the registers and the information desk, plus shift leads, a store manager and people who handle receiving and stocking.

Opening-team jobs typically show up on the company's careers site ahead of the doors opening, since a new crew needs time to train. If you want in on the opening team, check that page often through October and have your availability, especially nights and weekends, spelled out on your application. Pay for the Harbor East roles has not been published.

A Second Store Coming to Lutherville

Harbor East is not the only one. Barnes & Noble also signed a lease for a larger, roughly 17,800-square-foot store with a B&N Cafe at Lutherville Station, the transit-oriented redevelopment next to Yorkridge Shopping Center in Baltimore County, pitched by its developer for its direct transit access. That store is expected in late 2026 or early 2027. With a cafe in the mix, expect it to hire for food service as well as bookselling. For county residents in Timonium, Towson and Lutherville, that may be the closer commute. City residents will find Harbor East the easier trip.
